Biography

Dr. Shanley Deal completed her medical training at Oregon Health & Science University before arriving at Virginia Mason Medical Center for her General Surgery residency. She went on to complete a minimally invasive, bariatric and advanced GI fellowship at the Medical College of Wisconsin before returning to Virginia Mason as a faculty member. She is a board-certified general and bariatric surgeon who specializes in minimally invasive surgery for obesity, benign esophageal disorders and gastrointestinal surgery. She also has a special interest in complex abdominal wall hernias, inguinal hernias and gallbladder surgery. She serves as the Associate Program Director and Curriculum Coordinator for the Virginia Mason General Surgery residency training program. She is an advocate for surgical trainees and an early adopter of advances in surgical education.Dr. Deal is a member of the American College of Surgeons, Association of Program Directors in Surgery, Association of Surgical Education, American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, and Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES). She is co-chair of the SAGES Safe Cholecystectomy Task Force. Away from work, Dr. Deal loves spending time with her husband, two children, family and friends. She enjoys running, hiking, traveling and cooking.
